Private dropshipping agent vs AliExpress

We are an agent, so we have an obvious bias. That is exactly why this page also says plainly when AliExpress is the better choice for you. Both are legitimate ways to run a store. They suit different stages.

  • No marketing spin
  • Includes when to stay on AliExpress

The short version

AliExpress is a marketplace. You buy from an individual seller, order by order, with no relationship and no commitment in either direction. That is a genuine strength. It is fast, flexible and it costs nothing to walk away.

A private agent is a supplier relationship. One company sources your products, inspects them, packs them in your branding and ships them, and answers to you when something goes wrong. That costs a little setup effort and removes the marketplace safety net.

Most successful stores use AliExpress to find out what sells, and an agent to sell it properly. Treating this as a permanent either/or decision is usually the mistake.

Side by side

How the two actually differ

Written as neutrally as we can manage. Where AliExpress is stronger, the table says so.

Factor AliExpress Private agent
Getting started Immediate. Create an account, pick a listing, start selling. No conversation with anyone. Takes a few days. You send products, get a quote, order a sample, then connect your store.
Product range Enormous. Almost anything manufactured in China is listed somewhere. Whatever you ask for, but sourced deliberately rather than browsed. Better suited to a focused range than to endless testing.
Who you deal with A marketplace seller, who may be the factory, a trading company or a reseller. It is not always clear which. One named contact who is responsible for every product you sell, regardless of which factory made it.
Quality control Depends entirely on the individual seller. Units are generally not inspected on your behalf before dispatch. Every unit inspected before packing as part of the standard service.
Branding Possible with some sellers if you negotiate it, but inconsistent across products and sellers. Branded mailers, insert cards, hang tags and boxes as standard, across every product.
Delivery time Varies widely. Depends on the seller, the shipping method chosen at checkout and the destination. Faster paid lines are usually available. Consistent, because the same routing decisions are applied to every order rather than left to each seller.
Price Marketplace pricing. Competitive at low volume, and very easy to compare. Factory pricing plus a service margin. Usually better at volume, sometimes similar at very low volume.
When something goes wrong Marketplace dispute process. Structured, but slow, and you are the one running it. One conversation with your contact. A faulty or lost parcel gets a replacement to your customer or a refund. There is no marketplace scheme behind it, so it rests on the agent keeping its word.
Buyer protection Yes. A formal marketplace protection scheme sits behind every order. No marketplace scheme. Which is exactly why choosing a trustworthy agent matters.
Scaling to your own product Not really the purpose. You would normally move to a manufacturer separately. A natural next step. Same supplier, same contact, bulk and private label production.

Stay on AliExpress if…

  • You are still testing many products and have very few orders on any of them
  • You want to launch today, with no conversations and no setup
  • You value formal marketplace buyer protection over a personal relationship
  • Your order volume is too low for an agent relationship to be worth anyone’s time

There is no shame in this and we will tell you so directly if you ask us for a quote at this stage. Paying for a service you are not ready to use is just a cost.

Move to an agent if…

  • You have consistent daily orders on one or a few products
  • Refunds, complaints or inconsistent product quality are eating your margin
  • You want your own branding in the parcel, on every product, every time
  • You are planning to move to bulk or private label within the next year
  • You are spending too much of your own time chasing suppliers and orders

If two or three of these describe your store, the numbers usually work. Send us your products and compare the quote against what you pay now.

What we are not going to claim

Plenty of agent websites make claims about marketplaces that do not hold up. For the record:

  • We are not going to tell you AliExpress always ships slowly. Delivery depends on the seller, the shipping line chosen and the destination, and faster paid options exist.
  • We are not going to tell you every marketplace seller is dishonest. Many are the factory, and many are good to deal with.
  • We are not going to quote you a percentage saving. Your saving depends on your products and your volume, and any number we invented would be meaningless.

The fair summary: AliExpress is optimised for buyers who order once. An agent is optimised for a brand that ships the same product every day. Your job is to work out which of those describes your store right now, and to change your answer when it changes.

FAQ

Agent vs AliExpress questions

Cost, timing, switching and the downsides of each.

Is a dropshipping agent better than AliExpress?

Neither is universally better. AliExpress is excellent for testing products cheaply with no relationship and no commitment. A private agent is better once you have consistent orders, because one supplier takes responsibility for sourcing, inspection, branding and shipping across every order.

When should I switch from AliExpress to an agent?

The usual trigger is consistent daily orders on one or two products, or the point where returns and complaints start eating your margin. If you are still testing many products with a handful of orders, AliExpress is often the more sensible option.

Is a dropshipping agent cheaper than AliExpress?

Sometimes, but not always, and it depends on volume. Agents buy from the factory rather than from a marketplace seller, which can reduce the unit cost at volume. At very low volume the difference may be small or non-existent. The bigger saving is usually in fewer refunds, fewer disputes and less of your own time.

Can I use my own branding on AliExpress orders?

Some AliExpress sellers will add a logo or an insert card if you ask and the volume justifies it, but it is negotiated seller by seller and it is not consistent. An agent handles branding as part of the standard process across every product you sell.

What are the downsides of using an agent?

You give up marketplace buyer protection and rely on the relationship instead, which means picking the right agent matters. You also need enough order volume for the relationship to be worth their time and yours. And switching takes effort, because you have to quote, sample and reconnect your store.

Send the products you are already selling and we will quote them honestly. If the numbers do not beat your current setup, we will tell you that rather than talk you into switching.
