“How long does shipping from China take” has no single answer, because several completely different journeys travel under that description. A single parcel going to one customer, a pallet of stock going to your warehouse, and a container going to a port are not the same journey, and they are not even measured the same way.
This guide gives the real ranges for each, explains what the clock actually starts on, and covers the reasons a parcel arrives later than the number you were quoted.
The four ways goods leave China
| Method | Typical time | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Tracked parcel post | 3 to 8 days to the UK and Europe, 5 to 8 days to the US, 6 to 10 days to Canada and Australia, counted after dispatch | Single customer orders |
| Air freight | 3 to 7 days in the air, 5 to 11 days door to door | Bulk stock needed soon |
| Sea express | About 25 to 30 days door to door to the United States | Restocking without paying air rates |
| Sea freight | 14 to 25 days port to port to the US West Coast, 30 to 40 days to the East Coast | Large or heavy bulk orders |
Tracked parcel post. One parcel, one customer, moved on an e-commerce line run by a consolidator such as YunExpress or 4PX and handed to the local postal service or courier for the final delivery. This is how dropshipping fulfillment orders travel. Typical transit is 3 to 8 days to the UK and Europe, 5 to 8 days to the United States, and 6 to 10 days to Canada and Australia.
Air freight. Bulk stock flown in, then cleared and delivered by road. The flight itself is quick, roughly 3 to 7 days from handover to arrival, but door to door it is more like 5 to 11 days once collection from the factory, consolidation, the flight, customs clearance and inland delivery are counted.
Sea express. A middle option that most lists leave out. Goods go by sea, but customs clearance and the final delivery leg are included, so the shipment arrives at your address rather than at a port. To the United States this is typically 25 to 30 days door to door, at a cost far closer to sea freight than to air.
Sea freight. Bulk stock in a container. Port to port is usually 14 to 25 days to the US West Coast and 30 to 40 days to the East Coast, which has to go through the Panama Canal. Door to door is considerably longer, and independent tracking of real shipments in August 2026 put China to US West Coast at about 37 days and China to US East Coast at about 66 days once the full journey was measured.
That last gap is worth sitting with. The same route is honestly described as 18 days or 37 days depending on which two points you measure between. Neither number is a lie. This is the single biggest reason people feel misled about shipping from China.
What the clock actually starts on
When a supplier says 5 to 8 days, they almost always mean transit time, which starts the moment the parcel is scanned as dispatched. Your customer, reasonably, starts counting when they paid.
Between those two moments sits everything that is not transit:
- Buying the product, which is same day if the stock is already in a warehouse and several days if it has to be collected from the factory
- Quality checking and packing, which is hours if it is being done properly on a normal day
- Handover to the carrier, which usually happens once a day rather than continuously
Then after transit there is customs clearance, which is normally hours but occasionally days, and the final delivery leg by the local carrier, which follows their own schedule and not the shipper’s.
So an honest version of a 5 to 8 day quote to a US customer is more like 6 to 11 days from the moment your customer clicks buy, assuming the product is already in the warehouse. If it has to be collected from the factory first, add the collection time.
None of this is a reason to distrust the 5 to 8. It is a reason to write your store’s delivery promise from the customer’s clock, not the carrier’s.
Why parcels run late when nothing is wrong
Chinese New Year. Factories close for two to four weeks, and the backlog takes weeks more to clear once they reopen. The dates move each year. Anyone selling from China who does not warn you about this is not paying attention. It hits bulk orders hardest, which is covered in how long Alibaba takes to ship.
Peak season. In the run up to Christmas, air capacity gets scarce. This rarely shows up as an announced change. It shows up as parcels sitting a day or two longer at each step.
Customs inspections. Random and unavoidable. A parcel pulled for inspection can lose days for no reason connected to the product.
Weather and port congestion. Mostly a sea freight problem, and the reason sea transit is quoted as a range rather than a date.
Address problems. More common than people expect, and the delay lands at the end of the journey where it is most visible.
How to read a shipping promise before you commit
Three questions separate a real answer from a sales answer.
“Is that transit time or door to door?” If the answer is vague, assume transit time and add the rest yourself.
“What happens if it is late?” A supplier who has a written answer for late and lost parcels has dealt with it before. One who says it never happens has not been doing it long.
“Which route is that quoted on?” The same country can be served by several lines at different speeds and prices. A quote without a route attached is a guess.
What we do
We ship single orders on tracked duty-paid lines, with transit counted after dispatch. That is 3 to 8 days to the UK and Europe, 5 to 8 days to the United States, and 6 to 10 days to Canada and Australia. For restocking into the United States we also run sea express, which reaches your address in about 25 to 30 days. Those are typical ranges based on how our parcels normally move, not guarantees, because no honest shipper can guarantee a customs queue.
Preparation before dispatch depends on whether your stock is already sitting in our warehouse or still has to be collected from the factory, and we tell you which when we quote rather than leaving it out of the number.
If you want the detail on routes, duties and the difference between parcel, air and sea for your own products, that is on the China shipping agent page. If you want a delivered price for a specific product to a specific country, send it to us and you will have it within 24 hours.
