Alibaba delivery times confuse people because an Alibaba order is not one journey, it is three, and the number in the listing usually describes only the middle one.
The three clocks
| Clock | What it covers | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| Production | Making or picking the goods | A day or two for stock items, two to four weeks made to order, longer with a new mould |
| Shipping | The journey out of China | A few days by express, 5 to 11 days door to door by air, 25 to 30 days by sea express to the US, several weeks by sea freight |
| Customs | Clearance on arrival | Usually hours, occasionally days |
Production. The goods have to exist. For an item the supplier already holds, this is a day or two of picking and packing. For something made to order it is typically two to four weeks, and for anything needing a new mould or a custom print setup it can be longer. This is the part that surprises people, and on a custom order it is often longer than the shipping.
Shipping. The journey out of China. Express courier is the quickest at a few days. Air freight is roughly 3 to 7 days in the air, or 5 to 11 door to door once collection, consolidation and delivery are counted. Sea freight is 14 to 25 days port to port to the US West Coast, 30 to 40 to the East Coast, and considerably more measured door to door. Sea express, which includes customs clearance and delivery to your address, is about 25 to 30 days to the United States.
Customs. Usually hours. Occasionally days, if a shipment is selected for inspection or the paperwork needs correcting. Nobody can promise this one.
A quote of “7 days” almost always refers to the middle clock alone. The honest total is all three.
A realistic example
Say you order 300 units of a product that has to be made, shipped by air to the United Kingdom.
- Production: 2 to 3 weeks
- Collection and export handling: 2 to 3 days
- Air freight: 5 to 11 days door to door
- Customs and final delivery: 1 to 3 days
That is roughly four to six weeks from payment to goods on your shelf. If the same order went by sea, add several weeks more. If it went by express courier and the goods were already in stock, it could be under a week.
Same platform, same supplier, wildly different answers, which is why the question has no single number.
What makes it slower
Chinese New Year. The single biggest factor. Factories close for two to four weeks, and the backlog takes weeks more to clear after they reopen. The dates move each year with the lunar calendar. Plan around it rather than discovering it.
Custom work. Every change you request adds time. A new colour is quick. A new mould is not. What can be customised and what it needs is on the private label dropshipping page.
Payment timing. Production normally starts when payment clears, not when you place the order. A slow transfer is a slow start.
Sampling. If you approve a sample first, which you should, add the sample round trip to the total. How to find suppliers in China covers what to check when it arrives.
Peak season. The run up to Christmas tightens air capacity, which shows up as extra days at every handover rather than as an announcement.
How to get a realistic date from a supplier
Ask three separate questions rather than one general one.
“What is your production lead time for this quantity?” Ask before you discuss shipping. It stops the two numbers getting merged.
“What shipping methods can you offer and what does each cost and take?” You want options priced side by side, not a single recommendation.
“When will the goods be handed to the carrier, and when do you expect them to arrive?” Two dates, not one. The gap between them is the only part the carrier controls.
If a supplier cannot give you all three, they are guessing, and you should build extra time into your plan.
If the timing matters more than the price
Two things shorten the total dramatically.
Buy something that already exists, rather than something that has to be made. Production is usually the longest clock, and it disappears entirely when the stock is on a shelf.
Hold your stock closer to the customer. A product sitting in a warehouse ready to dispatch skips production and export handling altogether, and the customer’s wait becomes the shipping leg alone.
That is the model we run. Stock sits in our warehouse in China, free with no time limit, and orders leave the same day they come in, with transit of 3 to 8 days to the UK and Europe and 5 to 8 days to the United States after dispatch.
The detail on routes and methods is on the China shipping agent page, and the wider question of what a realistic delivery promise looks like is covered in how long does shipping from China take.
